The 38th edition of Greenwood Higher Secondary School annual sports meet got underway on Wednesday at Kuda village, Half Nagarjan in Dimapur with Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), Vishal, as the chief guest.
Games item ranging from long jump, high jump, and 100m, 200m, 400m, and 800m dash to table tennis, sepak takraw, football, and basketball will be witnessed in the event, which is about to continue till Oct. 6. Students, both boys and girls, have been categorised into three categories namely intermediate, junior, and mini.
During the opening ceremony, the chief guest hoisted the school’s flag to symbolise the commencement of the sports week followed by a torch run and march-past by the students. Further, a welcome address was delivered by the principal.
Meanwhile, DCP Vishal, in his speech, said that sport is the best way to build one’s character and encouraged the young athletes by saying that participation is more important than winning or losing. “Participation itself tells us that you have the courage to take your dreams to a manifestation,” he explained. He later advised the students to make more friends across sections and classes by saying that those friends will be the one they will really remember.
