Today, the 19th of February 2019 marks the start of Yuan Xiao or The Lantern Festival which is the climatic finale of the Chinese New Year celebrations all over the world.
This festival has been a tradition for more than 2000 years, dating back to the Han Dynasty of China. It is a time where people enjoy lion dances, gaze at the moon, eat rice balls, tell riddles, and light lanterns for a variety of reasons. Earlier it was a festival celebrated to provide offerings to the gods; some were lit for happiness, some for newlywed or couples without children, some with love notes for their secret crush, etc. The Lantern Festival is sometimes considered as the Chinese version of Valentine’s Day .
