Resonance commemorates the Silver Jubilee of Tetso College.
This year we seek writings and art related to the theme of ‘Nostalgia’. Nostalgia, while having Greek origins is something that has come to be used in common parlance recently. The word has been derived from the Greek words consisting of nostos which means “return home” and álgos which means “longing” and was coined by a 17th century Swiss medical student, Johannes Hofer in his medical dissertation in 1688 to describe the anxiety displayed by Swiss mercenaries fighting away from home. Earlier, nostalgia was seen as nothing more than a disease, akin to PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) that needed to be cured and Swiss doctors believed that opium, leeches, and a journey to the Swiss Alps would take care of nostalgic symptoms. However, with the passage of time, nostalgia has ascended that definition and now, in the present context may be defined as a “sentimental longing or wistful affection for a period in the past”. Nostalgia became an important trope in Romanticism with poets such as Wordsworth, Coleridge, Yeats, and other writers of this period. The common themes included the revival of romance modes, the renewed interest or imaginative investment in national and cultural past, the reanimation of oral cultures and orality. Naga literature also tends to delve primarily on nostalgia of the past – the era before colonization, and the Anglicization of life in general. Nostalgia, writes one critic of postmodernity, “exiles us from the present as it brings the imagined past near”.
We invite poets, budding story writers, essayists, playwrights, painters, and photographers to contribute their original works for publication in this e-book.
