With no written record, the Nagas have been depending on the folklore that has passed down through generations. These folk tales are not just stories of the past but it embodies wisdom, knowledge, belief and lifestyle which defines the unique identity of the various tribes. The art of storytelling has been a source of traditional and cultural knowledge which helped the people to understand their roots as well as their foundation to establish themselves as indigenous people of the Naga Hills. The oral tradition is a source of social and cultural knowledge that has governed the people and it is not just people’s constitution of literature but has contributed to the progression and survival of the people. The oral tradition became the repository for all the knowledge related to the origin, socio cultural aspects of Naga society. The belief in the folklore, myth and legends that they uphold is closely woven in the lifestyle in an elaborate and intricate way. Each belief influences the nature of their communal lifestyle.
