Death Note is a Japanese manga series written by Tsugumi Ohba and illustrated by Takeshi Obata. It ran in Shueisha’s manga magazine Weekly Shonen Jump from December 2003 to May 2006. Its 108 chapters were collected in 12 tankōbon volumes. A 37 episode anime television series adaptation was broadcasted and the series was also adapted into three live-action, a light novel, and additional video games were published as well.
It is a story about a nerd, Light Yagami, who acquires a supernatural object. “The death note.” It gives him the ability or power to kill a person the way he wants just by briefing it. The story revolves around various themes like justice, God, and mind games. Light induces justice to the world by exterminating all criminals, murderers, and rapists from the surface of the planet. L, a well-known detective, on the other hand, chases Light and wants to stop him from killing people.
Light Yagami becomes a questionable main character with controversial ideals as he attempts to play God and control death. He had a goal in mind, a noble one. But as he gets drunk with more power, he becomes more ignorant, manipulative, and careless that he ends up making a fatal mistake. In short, it is a story about how a person can lose all his morality when he gains too much power.
This anime has made me ponder and question my thoughts about life and death, humanity, and views on our ideals. It’s one of the stories that clashes on what is right, what is wrong, what should be done in this world and how far can you go to correct the very essence of what is wrong with society.
As an individual who likes the psychological thriller genre, ‘death note’ is an exceptional anime I personally enjoyed. It is a well-paced thriller with remarkable characters, thought-provoking themes, lots of unexpected twists, the goth-like and depressing vibe just adds to the plot and everything else. I totally encourage and recommend watching it. It is simply spectacular, addictive, and fun. Also, the amazing soundtracks work like a charm to complement the heart-wrenching suspense it offers. Its audacious attempt to explore and even question the idea of morality is ambitious and ultimately more hit than miss. It is the perfect diet for your brain!
