‘’They say it’s a sad season for the lonely, but sometimes, a bowl of hot soup can be all the company you’ll ever need’’ –  An excerpt from Loneliness is an Orange by Emisenla Jamir

Loneliness is an Orange is a book written by Emisenla Jamir. It was published by Barkweaver Publications in the year 2018. A book containing a collection of short poems.

This is one of the books which I read most of the time and I would consider it as my favorite since I can really connect with it. My leisure times are spent reading this same book. It gave insight to my feelings and also motivated me how to deal.  Coming into the context of this book, it is a collection of short poems dealing with the writer voicing her deepest thoughts, emotions and experiences faced in a modern Naga society. She talks about a busy modern world where people could be lost and isolate themselves, growing loneliness with no escape.

In her poems, she mainly talks about isolation, fear and new beginnings. How men can isolate oneself from others by going through emotions and how it affects their well-being. Through those short poems she mentions about guilt and fears based on past tragedies which makes a person so connected with their past  making them unable to move on. She encourages us through her poems on how to lean forward and keep moving on. Through this book she speaks about the unlimited emotions one had to go through every single day. She talks about how the tiresome thing about this life makes it beautiful.

Every poem in this book tells us how to stay true to our self and turn away from spaces which we no longer hold of (past lives). It also deals with our Naga tradition which has being pulled away with modernity and could not be avoided.

‘’We are stories in somebody’s tongue,

In somebody’s heart

In somebody’s head’’

What fascinates me the most is that the writer is more of enthusiastic writer and finds herself at peace and drawn to her humble surroundings. She is inspired by everyday life, nature, people and their experiences. She stated on how she wrote this book for herself and also for the other people.

One can grab hold of this book; it has positive reviews so far. Overall this book focuses and tells us that the past has no power.

‘’Your feet feel heavy,

They are walking pillars of salt.

If you turn back now,

All is lost’’
