As part of Women’s Week, a webinar on ‘Cyber Security and Youth’ was jointly organized by Chandraprabha Saikiani Centre for Women Studies, Tezpur University, in collaboration with Women Cell, Tetso College on 12th March 2021.
The resource person was Abhijit Baishya, Professional Assistant, Chandraprabha Saikiani Centre for Women Studies, Tezpur University.
Earlier, the opening remarks were given by Madhurima Goswami, Associate Professor, Chandraprabha Saikiani Centre for Women Studies. She said that although technology has made our lives easier, there is a looming security threat if we do not have a deeper understanding of how technology functions, citing examples of cyber bullying and online victimization.
Speaking as the resource person, Abhijit Baishya defined cyber-crime as offences that are committed against individuals with a criminal motive to intentionally harm the reputation of the victim or cause physical or mental harm, or loss to the victim using modern telecommunication network.
With cyber-crime at an all-time high as per data from National Crime Report Bureau, Baishya said that this trend was mostly due to the boom of social media users which is the most vulnerable platform. He highlighted the different types of crime such as hacking, child pornography, cyber stalking, denial of service, malware, virus, spyware, phishing, data interception, etc.
He cautioned the students to beware of ATM frauds and fraudsters on Facebook which are two of the most common cyber-crimes, according to him. The fraudsters come in many forms with the aim of cheating people of their money and many get lured by promises of making lakhs of rupees in a single day and end up paying a heavy price, he added.
Further, he urged the students to register and report any type of cyber-crime on the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal, an initiative of the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India under National Mission to facilitate victims/complainants to report cybercrime complaints online.
Meanwhile, the vote of thanks was delivered by Dr. Tatongkala Ao, Assistant Professor, Department of History, Tetso College. She thank the organizers for the collaboration and urged the students to apply the knowledge gained from the session in their daily lives.
