Imlikumzuk feels that while exams test the information retention of students, they fail to address their true understanding and potential. The writer adds that developing different skill sets and not memorization should be the focal point of one’s education.
In the present fast-paced 21st century world, where machines have outpaced most human capabilities, it has become evidential that man should keep pace with the constantly developing modern world. And one of the foundational pillars for man is to acquire education. The pursuit of education has almost become the central theme of man’s life as he dedicates half of his best years working tirelessly for an “A+”.
There are diverse and varied forms of education imparted all over the world distinct to each country. However, one point of uniformity is that the education system all over the world is based on the idea of memorization and not understanding. The education system tests this knowledge of the students through standardized exams. However, these exams only test the information and not the true understanding and potential of the students. The main goal of this system is about gaining information and not the development of skills in the students.
The present education system is designed to make the students memorize the notes. This same pattern of education has been followed for generations in which students simply studied in order to memorize the notes, pass the exams, and get high grades. This suggests that our education system considers memorization and understanding on the same level. The central focus of the education system should not be based entirely on the syllabus. It should rather be focused on the development of different skill sets- a deeper understanding of the text along with an emphasis on the individual talents of the students.
