Individuality: A Sense of True Freedom – Alobo Ayemi, BA 3rd Semester, Mass Communication Honours

Individuality: A Sense of True Freedom

In a world where society tells us how to act, look, and think, being truly free gets tricky. For many, freedom means being able to make choices and follow your dreams without anyone stopping you. But expectations can impact our sense of freedom. Often, we feel obligated to meet the expectations of our families, even if it means sacrificing our own desires. This can create internal conflict and prevent us from living authentically. An individual is never  free because they’re doing what others want, not what they want. And it’s not just families, but societal expectations often make it difficult to feel truly free. Society plays a significant role in shaping our perceptions of freedom. From a young age, we are taught to conform to societal norms and expectations.  Expectations regarding how men and women should behave can limit individual expression and perpetuate harmful stereotypes. It also creates the fear of being judged  and rejection often holding us back from pursuing our dreams.

Allow me to give an insight through a movie called,  “Taare Zameen Par”, a cinematic gem that celebrates the splendour of individuality. The film urges audiences to peel back the layers and appreciate the inherent value and potential within every unique soul. The struggles of Ishaan, a young boy grappling with dyslexia, portrayed with exceptional depth by Darsheel Safary. Through his lens, viewers are transported into a world where letters twist and numbers blur, underscoring the profound impact of his learning difference on his sense of self-worth and academic achievements. Yet, amidst the chaos of his educational journey, “Taare Zameen Par” elegantly unveils the brilliance and creativity inherent within Ishaan’s mind. It’s a timeless reminder of the magnificence found in embracing the diversity of human thought and experience.

The film’s brilliance lies in its exploration of societal norms that often overshadow the uniqueness of individuals like Ishaan. In a rigid educational system that fails to accommodate his needs, viewers confront the sobering reality of overlooked brilliance. However, through the intervention of his empathetic art teacher, portrayed by Aamir Khan, Ishaan discovers a sanctuary where his strengths are celebrated, not scrutinised. This emotional connection serves as a catalyst for Ishaan’s personal growth and self-acceptance, illustrating the profound impact of empathy on one’s perception of self and the world.

Existing in a world where people tell us what to do and how to be, finding true freedom can be hard. True freedom is about being yourself without saying sorry. It’s about being who you are and going after what you love, even if it’s tough. But it’s not just about doing what you want. It’s also about making sure everyone is treated fairly and equally. It’s important to remember that true freedom comes from being true to ourselves, even if it means going against the expectations of others.

Stand up for what’s right, even when it’s hard. Speak out against unfairness and work together to make the world a better place for everyone. It’s about celebrating our differences and embracing who we are, even when no one is watching. We live in a world where expectations can weigh us down, yet let us  remember to be true to ourselves. Let’s celebrate our uniqueness and strive to create a world where everyone’s individuality is valued and respected. That should be the true meaning of freedom.

When no one’s watching, and you have the power to be your true self, free from the expectations and society’s rules. Take a moment to  celebrate your individuality in its purest form, embracing who you truly are. Let the world fade into the background as you stand alone in the spotlight of your own existence, to ask yourself: Who am I? Who do I truly desire? What do I want to do with my life?

Find your way through these complex and confusing situations, try to find your way through the maze. Facing challenges and figuring out the best path forward can feel like trying to find your way out of a maze where everything seems complicated and difficult because of societal expectations, but the quest for genuine freedom beckons us to transcend mere self-expression. It implores us to become champions of equity and justice, advocating not only for ourselves but for the marginalised and oppressed. Embracing our individuality becomes a rallying cry, inviting us to revel in the kaleidoscope of human diversity.

As we forge ahead, hand in hand, our collective mission extends beyond personal liberation. It encompasses the noble pursuit of a world where fairness is the cornerstone, equality the bedrock, and justice the guiding principle. Our journey towards true freedom is a tapestry woven with threads of inclusivity and acceptance, each strand a testament to the beauty of our differences.

Together, let us sculpt a reality where authenticity flourishes by being free from obstacles, limitations, or restrictions. Allow yourself to move and progress smoothly and easily passing through the shackles of conformity. Let us cultivate a society where every voice is heard, every identity celebrated. In this harmonious symphony of diversity,  sow the seeds of a brighter tomorrow, where the legacy of our collective efforts will echo through the annals of time, lighting the way for generations yet unborn.
