Slices of Life – Rosy Tep Assistant Professor, Department of English

Life is complex and kaleidoscopic in nature. It’s share of challenges affect each one of us irrespective of age and status. However, with the passage of time we learn to either cope or drown. Youngsters who might have just stepped out of their comfort zones of their homes into school and college will often find themselves exposed to a different world of experiences. Yet, life begins when you learn to embrace it and value each moment in time.

Slices of Life

Have you ever kept yourself in a shape where you subconsciously live out every day? Have you ever felt being cut off from people and feel like a stranger living in a strange world? In this modern world, for some reason, it is little wonder that we feel depersonalized and alienated with the monotonous cycle that continues called ‘Life’; the term is overused yet literally, we are living a cliché life. This new age is certainly not new, new hope is certainly not new, and new dreams are certainly not new; because with the life force of every kind being piped into our living rooms, it has left our feelings numbed; like any tragedy or sufferings which befalls so often, that you are not shocked anymore. We are living in a world where there is no error nor truth, we believed what we feel is right and vice versa. We are in a world where it really doesn’t matter whether you’re a winner or a loser, but what matters most is our understanding of one’s subjective ideas. The patterns of life have changed, nobody cares how you live your life, but you.

I wonder what ‘A Day in the Life’ of a young college-goer is like. Sometimes the academics could be unrelated to the problem of today, at the same time there could be a shift in the way in which they are being educated, hordes of assignments and projects in a row, too many expectations from parents and so, chaotic thought sequences crowded the mind and the young student goes home highly critical to assess things. And just beneath the surface, there is this unbearably frustrating-frustration like how most of the adults were swamped with work in a day. It is an issue of over-all break of cultured standards and values of the time. The daily practices of life in a day is no longer considered alarmed but the casual taking of humankind. The only differences that we need to see to ourselves with a day in the life are the connection if we want to recognize the essence of human life and flourish the way it is.

At present day, the worldwide trend has dismissed the teachings of reality. Youngsters show a lack of ideals and an inability to cope with life, and so they are easily manipulated which led them to follow the other-so-called new slogans, new insights, new morality, and the new age styles. Having being accepted by society, and having being carried away by the prospect of high-end knowledge are, in many ways luring young faces of the time. We are, but caught in two worlds today; the one dying and the other seeking to be born only by the striking hours of a clock that poignantly marks the drifting moments. Each day life gives pressure, sometimes abnormally that our train of thoughts gives the reactions to situations one finds themselves in. A lot can happen in a day.

We are living in a time of conflict and cultural transformation each day. Every day we see violence, the tragedies of ruined careers, broken lives, angry crowds banging out in protest with hope for chances and opportunities; thousands are dying in a day, thousands are born in a day. We are, however, constantly confronted by the realities of the new problem in this broken age. All these and many more show us the daily incidents of human life which are skyrocketing each day. Time is crucial that befits a human mind, it toggles us to lift up to the moment ‘now’ which has the lead over every other because we own the time, it’s ours. With time, a day’s work is through and when it comes to everyday, human yearns for more over time. Some people want the best of times for all the tomorrows and so they live like bums even though they have their fortunes wrapped in plastics hidden somewhere else; some workaholics isolate their families to spend more time at the office adding more million to their millions. You never get enough over the things you have to face in a day.

Life justly gives a thousand spotlights so as humans get fascinated with the world that offers. Because we are made the way we are, we try to satisfy our competing urges what the world has to offer. The idea about the actual ‘A Day in a Life’ could mean a slice of life occurred in a single day and how time plays differently in our lives as a mechanism and as a life force, for our future always has its way of arriving unannounced. At this point of the day, there might be some who are thrilled out by watching a football match, some struggling to get in for an interview, some paying thousands to get a lead against another, some relentlessly fighting for their lives, some making a trip feasting on time, and some undeniably reading an article of these sorts. We will never find time for anything, why waste it, time will never be just right.

A new discovery, a new life, a new hope, and a new chance can occur in any particular day to a mere being, not just ‘once in a million day’ because it is only this time we have got whether it is the best of times or the worst of times.

With this quotidian existence, as I look back at my life thus far, I realize that the best ‘Day in a Life’ wasn’t necessarily the day something great or exciting happened; rather, they were those days when I felt good about myself because I grew as a person; days when I grew mentally, physically, and spiritually; days when I connected with someone; days when I picked myself up in zones I’m fading.

Have you figured out your day in the life yet? Have you realized the day wasted over time unbound? We all need it to make ourselves a better person. We need it so we constantly see opportunities and view problems as situations. Have a plan for the day. In short, we need it so we can be free. Our structure is ever-evolving, as we periodically review, assess, and adjust to it. Because it is also easy to get caught in the blur of a day and not reflect on where we are right at present day.

If you know that you owe yourself an answer to this question at the end of the day, don’t you think that will help you make better choices every day?
